Check two bags ($60! Highway robbery!)
05:45 – Through security (TSA PRE rocks!)
06:58 – Board AA3650 (EMB regional jet). As expected, my duffel bag with my primary electronics fits under the seat in front of me (barely). My tripods, clothing, and most of my medications are checked. (I carry today’s doses on my person.)

“Are we there yet?”

09:17 – on approach to OKC. cumulus field up to 5K feet or more NE of the airport.  My neighbor is upset with the turbulence. I wonder if she collects Fearful Flyer miles for assuming the crash position during our ascent. (She did this the last 10 minutes of the flight! Hope she’s OK.)

09:28: “hello, KTLX!”
09:35 — At gate.
__:__   — Collect my bags
__:__   — Get rental car
11:06 — Visit Baker Photo & Video
Bought brackets to allow stacking a
             GoPro on the Nikon D7000
11:45 — visited Sam’s Club; bought laundry soap pods, ZipFizz, and protein bars for the
next 2 weeks
12:10 — lunch at Lin’s, a popular Chinese buffet
with sushi and minute steaks (the taste
as good as any sirloin I have had here).
_____ — Head south on I 44/I 35. Exit 79 W. to Chickasha. Lots of rain, but nothing severe looking. Still, it was nice to get out among storms.
14;55 — Stopped briefly in Maysville to grab a rockstar and some sugar-free gum
16:15 — stop at Chickasha long enough to get an update with Owen; Dallas to OKC flight delayed further 🙁
16:20 — headed back to holiday in OKC/airport; checked in; paid toll of $1.50 near Chickasha
19:32 — bumped into Matt White, and Collin in the lobby; went to Charleston’s with Collin for dinner (chips and salsa and queso, house salad, 7 ounce filet, and a Sam Adams Boston Lager to wash it down).
20:00 — Owen is finally airborne. Hoping he will arrive by 9:30 PM or thereabouts.
21:30 — still waiting on that call from the airport *sigh*
21:55 — I get a text message from Owen. He is at OKC, luggage in hand. We stop at 7-Eleven along the way, so he can grab a bite to eat (and get his body clock synchronized Oklahoma time). Second stop is at Charleston’s, but they are closing, so we go to doors north to frosty mug and have a couple of drinks there to unwind.
00:23 – turn in for the evening.

Virtual Chase – 08 May 2015 – Southwest Oklahoma

11:21: It’s only a few days until I chase in the physical realm, but the conditions are amazing today (and better tomorrow).

Based on a preliminary look at the SPC outlook, I’m focusing on my target area of a 25 mile radius around Altus, Oklahoma (the orange dot located in southwestern Oklahoma.

20150508-1033-GRLevel3

I’ll update this as the day rolls on. If I were there in the flesh, I’d likely be starting my day from someplace in southwestern Kansas (like Liberal, KS) rolling down US83 south to Altus.

Liberal,KS-Altus,OK

Here’s a look at yesterday’s action:
20150507-filtered-storm-reports(See also: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/150507_rpts.html)

1603CDT: My forecast has verified! check these radar shots (composite reflectivity):
Near Childress: TOR warning on storm rotation (not observed yet):

20150508-1600a-grlevel3Over Altus: BULLSEYE!20150508-1600b-grlevel3Strategy: watch the both storms. Stay with the Altus storm. Let the southern storm move toward me.

1630: Sheriff-nado at 16:23! (But plenty of chasers (Jim LaDue, Tony Mesias, David Drummond, others) are sitting on this storm attentively. (Local emergency management has another sighting at Oklaunion around 17:21.)

20150508-1630a-grlevel31640: TOR warnings dropped on the southern storm. Wait a bit longer, then slide east (to Anadarko, about an hour’s drive). Stay on the Altus storm.

1648: Course correction: Will go south at Lawton,OK (or north, if the Altus storm gets much stronger). Checking the tornado climatology rating on the Vernon (southern) storm: STP of 3+ !

20150508-1648-SPC-meso_torc_limo_envOk. Given that i was not watching the radar constantly, I’ve missed the better storm. Do I abandon the Altus storm or go for the larger storm (perhaps missing both)?
[Real world note: 2.75-inch fell at 16:11 in Caddo. Odds are that if I’d been there in the flesh, I’d have move east earlier instead of getting hammered by near-baseball size hail.]

17:14: The storm that was over Altus is fizzling. “Head south!”

17:38: Ok. Heading south on I-44 from Lawton to Randlett (36 minute drive), hoping to reach the Vernon storm in time.

GRlevel2 shows this to be a monster (looking from east toward the I-44 crossing of the Red River and beyond, to the west)
20150508-1738a-grlevel2

17:48: Pulled off at Walters, OK exit. Have to let the storm slide on by. I arrived too late!
Oh, well, tomorrow is another day. (Will circle back to Lawton for dinner, hotel, etc.)

END RESULT: A strong storm at my target, but the storm of the day is further south.

Amateur Astronaut Checklist – 2015 edition

Every year my gadget collection evolves, as gear wears out or needs a technology refresh to keep up with new capabilities in the field.  The following checklist (and its predecessors) have been my constant companion for over 10 years:

The ever-evolving checklist, obviously technology-driven
The ever-evolving checklist, obviously technology-driven (click to enlarge)

Without the list, I’d be rushing off on certain mornings, only to return to the motel where I’d left a key piece of gear.

I learned the lesson years ago when a member of the tour staff left an expensive camera in Norfolk, Nebraska.  We returned several days later to collect the missing camera, but only after frantic phone calls and changes to our positioning strategy to allow the return. While the camera had been turned over to the local police department, it could have just have easily disappeared.  After witnessing the anguish suffered by my chase companion, I decided not to repeat his experience. Thus, the list was born.
