GREAT/SOUTHERN PLAINS CHASES
To keep the look and feel of supercell storms fresh in my mind

TEMPEST TOURS was not on my list this year.  After being without a full-time job for about 18 months, the cost of this kind of chase (and difficulty getting time off at my new job) made a Great Plains chase impossible.

About a 90-minute trip (via I55/80,IL 47,US52), featuring some wild driving, golfball sized hail, but no video (due to van maintenance in progress). I did grab a few cellphone photos after the fact.  Called in a hail report from 3 mi. east of Morris (I-80, milepost 115) and saw a cigar shaped cloud appendage that was probably the remnant of the earlier tornado in LaSalle county, based on reports from other spotters and chasers.  For storm reports, see http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/050330_rpt s.html
(NOTE: This was a rare ‘solo trip’ for me, i.e., no partner)

Follow-up trip to surgeon! As I was driving away from home, tornado warnings went up. As this happened during our normal ARES net drill, it took me a moment to use NOAA WX radio to confirm this was real. Utica, IL knew it was no drill! See a Utica photo gallery, NWS/LOT’s summary and a related ARRL article for more.
