DAY 3- Technical Difficulties Solved – Part 1

Now that I’ve caught up a little on sleep (6 hours last night … Yee-haw!), I’ve also gotten brave about facing some technical difficulties

The Everio DVD burner for my JVC hard disk camcorder died the day before I left home. When I bought it, the unit was hard-to-find, was released for sale many months after I bought the camera, and was a bit expensive. I tried all sorts of things to revive it (change power on order of camera and burner, clean the lenses, etc.), but once I smelled that burnt plastic smell from the unit, I knew the game was done.

Now, I’ve always had some good luck mixed in with the bad. One day, when I lived in Northern Virginia, I discovered my car had a flat tire; however, I was in the parking lot of a place that sold tires, the had my size tire, and it was even on sale. The mechanic even installed it in the parking lot (and then drove it inside, to balance and align the tire).

As it turns out, my failed DVD burner (a very proprietary direct-from-camcorder solution) is like the flat tire. I found the replacement unit at a Circuit City store 3 minutes from my house, it was on sale for $46 (a fraction of the price of the original unit), and I was able to buy it on my way to picking up Alex at O’Hare. My first attempt to offload video from the camcorder was fast and successful. Hopefully, I can clear a few hours of footage, to make room for video from today.

Now, if I can get my Acer laptop to behave, all will be right with the world again in chaser techno-land … OK, in my litle bit of territory within that realm. It is such a same that today’s computer manufacturer’s do not supply the installation media to rebuild a machine. Having the ability for the customer to burn a disk with their Windows installation is tolerable until your machine fails before you burn such a disk. Bad Acer! Naughty Acer!

DAY 3 – The Greener Greensburg – 20080526

The short version:

  • We grab a quick continental breakfast at the motel. Here’s a typical chaser breakfast (under the best of conditions):

    Con-brekkie, optimized

Often, there is even less than you see here (like no waffle). Enough said!

  • Drove from Hays, KS to Greensburg,KS
  • Shot photos of the still decimated town.

Wow, what a mess! I admire these folk for trying to rebuild. We tour the local sightseeing stop, the largest hand-dug well in the U.S. (which only survivied the tornado because (a) it was already underground and (b) it was protected a little by the building that used to be around it. Then we shoot some photos around town.

There’s not much left, even a year later:

The Greensburg water tower and environs

As we drive by houses, we still see the FEMA paint marks used to count the survivors, the injured, and those who wer etaken by the tornado. It is very sobering to be here.

Here’s a shot from inside their former Pizza Hut. Note the twisted steel beams:

Only a few yards awa, the drink cups are still in their dispensers (silver tubes, just right of center) on the wall:

Pizza Hut cups are still hanging on the wall

Greensburg will survive and re-build, propped up by Kansas stubbornness — yes, that’s a . compliment! — and a defiant ‘N0, WE WON’T GO!” attitude, best reflected by this sign:

Piss on the Tornado-- Greensburg will rebuild

(Dan seems to approve of the sign as much as I do!)

  • Ate lunch at the Sonic in Pratt:. The locals scarcely take notice of the chase van, having seen so many in the last month:

Hanging out at the Sonic in Pratt

  • Wandered around, finally returning to Greensburg,KS. Chaser convergence with Roger Hill and Silver Lining Tours ( a 5-vehicle caravan). After saying hello to Roger and the gang, Scot checks the RUC model, surface observations, and radar via our broadband connection:

    Scott checks the radar

  • Chased south of Greensburg, through Greensburg, through to areas SW of Wichita. Caught up with Tempest Tours south of Pratt.
  • Here we see Alex enjoying a moment of quiet reflection:

Alex comtemplates the last photo of the day

  • Lodged at Days Inn & Suites in Wichita.

DAY 2 – Chance for a late show in Central Kansas

I’m really tired from all the driving (due to a short night for sleep… about 5 hours altogether), so here’s the bullet list version of our day:

  • We met around 10 a.m., generally considered ‘sleeping in’ for a chase day.
  • We chose the central Kansas moderate risk area as our target, leaving Iowa behind. (Ironically, there was a large tornado near Waterloo, IA, only 1.5 hours from Coralville, where we started the day. C’est la vie!)
  • We struggled with getting a dedicated circuit for Scott’s inverter (thus for his laptop), making repeated adjustments to the power arrangement as we charged down I-80, I-35, I-70, and various connecting roads.  Nothing but a dedicated cigarette outlet seems to work out! I’m really frustrated we haven’t found a smaller inverter, an iGo adapter for the D600, or any better soluton for powering the laptop than we have.
  • The sun finally came out around Des Moines (exactly as Scott called it!)
  • About 2/3 of the way through our 600+ mile drive, we met up with the storms. We meet our first storms of the trip
  • We saw penny-, dime-, and nickel-sized hail around Ellsworth, KS
  • We got a good lightning show
  • We got huge amounts of rain
  • Once the storms moved on, we got a weird ‘mixed sky’ sunset: a partial red ball of a sun, dark purple to the north and east, isolated streaks of blue sky to the west, and broken, washed-out looking clouds to the south. If I were chasing solo, I’d have stopped to take a picture of this schzophrenic sky.

We ended up in the southern moderate risk area (like many folks hoping for a better tomorrow), but missed what little happened here, due to our late arrival.  The big picture of storm activity looked like this:

DAY 1 – Getting to the Field -20080524

Today I frantically prepared for the chase trip. It took a few hours to get the van organized and ready for two (maybe three) laptops to run simultaneously, iPod/MP3 player to hook up for passengers, seats to be set up for four people and their luggage to move in comfort, etc.

By mid-afternoon, all that remaining was:

  • Find my binoculars – did this later
  • Find the spare van key – found in one of my lockboxes after the third try – it was hiding!
  • Obtain an iGo adapter for Scott’s Dell D600 – I set up an inverter, but it failed to output an voltage for the laptop – we used Scott’s inverter, but sacrificed power for half the gadgets in the front console

Tomorrow, here in Coralville, Iowa, I’ll do a bit of re-wiring to get everything working at once. The good news is that despite these minor setbacks, everybody arrived safely and on-time, and we are in a good position to chase storms in central Iowa tomorrow. It will even be a short drive (compared to the 1200 mile day that kicked off my 2007 season)

GENERAL NOTES:

  1. Travel ties are based on motel check-in/check-out times, as motel receipts record these times, as a rule. Less recordkeeping, more fun!
  2. Actual odometer reading are use wehnever practical. Street Atlas 2009 will be used to estimate miles (via actual route or best recollection of that route) on days where odometer readings are missed.

Vacation Day from Hell – 20080523

Yikes!

Today has been an awful day.  I spent the whole morning geting my storm chase boorkmarks entered on my laptop when it started acting. In short, I lost 4+ hours of work when Foxmarks collided with a temporary file cleaner that’s part of Norton 360 protection software — at least I think that’s what happened.  The local file got clobbered AND then got auto-uploaded to my.foxmarks.com before I even realized what happened. I was able to restore the web-based Foxmarks bookmarks from a backup, but I lost everything I’ve done on this project for the last two days!

*head spins*

At least it wasn’t a hardware failure.

I guess it’s a blessing in disguise that the chase team won’t leave until Sunday morning.  I’ll certainly need all day tomorrow to pack, discover and fix any problems with cameras, clothing for the trip, etc.

Sitting at home two MOD RISK days — ACK!

I hate not being out in Chaseland on Moderate Risk days. Yesterday’s ‘mod risk’ was realized in the form of the killer Windsor, CO tornado and other sotrms in north central Kansas (my chosen target for mid-day yesterday: Hayes, KS, by the way).

And, another ‘mod risk’ is posted for the same general area today. Arrgh! I sure hope the weather is not spent before the four of us chasing together this coming week arrive there.

See the the source of my frustration at these URLs:

Yesterday’s Storm Reports

I would have missed the Windsor storm, in all likelihood, but the storms in Decatur County, Kansas were easily within reach of my mid-day target. (And they did not kill anybody, like the Colorado storms did.)

I only want to witness the power of nature, not see people homeless, hurt, or killed; a lot of people don’t understand this about storm chasers: we do not cheer on a tornado as it plows through a trailer park.

Last Day at Work

OK, gang. It’s my last day in the office until I return from CHASE2008. So far, everybody I’ve checked with says I’ve covered what I need to cover before vacation (thanks to preparations made earlier in the week).
I’ve gotten emails from Alex and Dan, but still need to hear from Scott on his itinerary, his power needs for his laptop, etc. Guess I’ll have to call. The van is ready except for some last minute storage of stuff we won’t need for the trip (so I have luggage space for the four of us). “Good to go!” (more or less).
Once I hear from Scott, I will post the consolidated itinerary for our team, so we know who’s where when. 🙂

T-7 days and counting

Well… it’s just days until the start of my 2008 chase season.

The van is setup, except for the laptop (more about this in a moment). It looks like there will be SOME sort of storms on next Saturday (5/24), so we could be off to a quick start this year. Given that I’ll be out for almost 3 weeks, I’d be sorely disappointed if we didn’t see SOMETHING this year.

I continue to revamp the beta web site, but have had little time this week due to activities at work. The coming week should be much better, and I hope to mainstream the beta site pages by midweek. One challenge is that I’m down two of the three computers I typically use at home, both because of dead fans. What’s stranger is that I purchase the laptop and desktop with bad fans at the same place, the same day. What are the odds, eh?

I have yet to collect my camera gear for its pre-season checkout; hopefully, tomorrow holds the time I need for this. The HDD camcorder probably has old vid that needs to be burned to DVD, and the lenses on my still cameras probably all need a good bath by now. Add in cleaning for my backup miniDV cams (one of which may serves as webcam for live feeds during the trip) and I’ll have a busy afternoon. It’s just as well that I have a quiet indoor activity tomorrow.

I spent most of today weeding, mowing and fertilizing the lawn, so my outdoor self is pretty satisfied for now (and I won’t worry about the Bolingbrook weed code enforcement officers issuing me tickets while I’m gone chasing).
